Lewis CarrollのAlice's Adventures in Wonderland及びThrough the Looking-Glassの翻訳は明治時代に始まり、今日まで数多くの翻訳が出版され、一般的に高い人気を誇っている。しかし、「アリス」はいかにして原作を離れてキャラクター文化の一例となったのか、或は少女性を表す一種のイコンとして機能するようになったのか、その要因を翻訳とその背景にある文化的現象から解明する。
