The purpose of this study was to investigate people’s ‘implicit authoritarian attitude’ and ‘explicit authoritarian attitude’, and to examine the relation of these attitudes with hypnotic susceptibility. An explicit authoritarian attitude was measured by the questionnaire, which included 28 items with four subscales and was developed by Noguchi (1998). An implicit authoritarian attitude was measured by an implicit association test. The two key concepts were ‘authority vs. ordinary’. Participants completed the implicit association test after filling out the authoritarianism questionnaire. They completed the Harvard Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility, Form A at the end of the study. A correlation analysis showed a significant positive correlation between the implicit authoritarian attitude and the score of Harvard Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility (r=.50, p<.05). However, there was no correlation between the explicit authoritarian attitude and the score of Harvard Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility. The result suggests that an implicit authoritarian attitude and hypnotic susceptibility is positively related.
