Title: Japanese traditional jujutsu: history and anthropology
Outline:
This lecture focuses on the transition to judo from jujutsu, based on historical and anthropological perspectives.
The class will introduce in detail the historical documents, especially the hand-scrolls owned by Jujutsu Ryuha (schools of jujutsu), which are the origin of Kodokan-judo founded by Jigoro Kano.
Specifically, it will focus on the Ryuha (schools) of Yoshin-ryu, Kito-ryu, and Tenjinshinyo-ryu: all iconic and popular schools in the Edo era.
Based on these three schools, the lecture will explain 1) the composition of the scrolls, and 2) the historical transition from jujutsu to judo.
