The purpose of this study is to explore the practice of pedagogies of affect, where pupils’ affective learning is the explicit goal of school physical education. This study adopts a pragmatic mixed-methods approach to investigate the complexity of the practice with a sample of Scottish secondary schools. The first of two studies that comprise the presentation involved video recording of physical education lessons for twenty teachers and questionnaires for pupils. The framework of need-supportive teaching behaviour was used as a proxy for pedagogies of affect, grounded in Self-Determination Theory. The findings indicated that observed need-supportive teaching behaviour directly impacted pupils’ affective learning outcomes. The second study employed self-confrontation interviews with eight teachers selected from the first study, and focus group interviews with pupils. The teachers were interviewed as they viewed video clips of their teaching from the first study and focused on the questions to what extent they were aware of their teaching behaviour and why they behaved in the ways they did. The key finding was how well teachers know the contextual factors about pupils such as their feelings, needs, and interests. This could be a fundamental requirement for implementing pedagogies of affect as naturally occurring in physical education.
